I began my library career as an undergraduate at Indiana University as a page in the graduate library and then moving on to reshelver, and eventually circulation desk assistant. During that time I became interested in a career in librarianship and obtained an MLS from the IU Graduate Library School after completing a B.S. in Accounting.
My first professional job was at Northern Illinois University 1973 as a Business Reference Librarian. I later became Acting Systems and Planning Librarian until that job became known as Assistant to the Director. At NIU, I directed the move to the then new Founders’ Memorial Library. This assignment kindled a career long interest in library planning, design, and architecture. While at NIU, I also earned an MBA degree.
Moving to the University of Oklahoma Library, in 1979 I became Assistant to the Dean for Administrative Services. While at OU under the Dean’s leadership, I developed a building program for a major expansion for the main library and served as the Library’s liaison to other members of the architectural and construction team. While at OU, I also became involved in LAMA.
In 1984, I moved to California State University, Bakersfield, as Director of Libraries, now Dean, University Library. Under my direction, CSUB built a new library that opened in 1994. I also continued my involvement in LAMA and served two terms as a juror for the AIA/ALA Library Building Awards program. In 2001, I also opened a library building consulting practice known as LibrariesByDesign, LLC.
My professional strengths are organizational leadership and management, financial management, problem solving, decision making and effective organizational communication, as well as library building programming, planning and design.

With an undergraduate degree in Accounting and an MBA, I am uniquely qualified to be your Treasurer. I fully understand the concepts and language of business and accounting from the theoretical persepective as well as from the practical perspective of more than 30 years in library management. As Treasurer I intend to use my educational background to translate the somewhat arcane details of accounting into practical concepts and language that everyone can understand. Transparency in reporting important ALA financial information is absolutely paramount for our association to continue to be successful in investing your dues and conference registrations wisely.
